Except for Trail 1 up to Barney and Peeler lakes, which traverses through an entirely granitic landscape—John Muir’s “Range of Light”—all the trails traverse through landscapes that are partly to entirely metamorphic. Rather than being lands of light gray, these are vari-hued earth-tones of brown, brownish red, rust, and shades of ochre. In addition to being more colorful, metamorphic rocks weather to produce more nutrients, and so these lands support an abundance of subalpine and alpine wildflowers.
