Public bonfires were made of British goods and shops selling them were picketed. Later, ‘Swadeshi’ became a major weapon in India’s struggle for freedom. This led to a spurt in the demand for Indian-made textiles. As a result, nearly 200 Swadeshi Mills soon sprang up in Bombay and Ahmedabad, producing Swadeshi cloth. The agitation in Bengal spread like wildfire affecting the entire country. In 1879, Banerjee started editing his own paper, The Bengali’. He once wrote an article in it, which antagonized the British rulers.
The Second International Socialist Congress, at Stuttgart in Germany, on August 22, 1907. Mr. Ramsay Macdonald, the British Labour leader, who later became the Prime minister of England, tried his best to prevent Madam Cama from becoming a delegate to the Congress.
