He made himself monarch for quite a long time, reinstating the office of “dictator,” which was originally a six-month position employed by the early Romans in times of great crisis, but one that had long fallen out of use. Technically, Sulla was “elected,” but in reality he used violence to force his way into becoming dictator for life. Yet, when he became sated with his absolute power, he had the courage to lay it down willingly—the first man, as far as I know, to have done so.
