Certainly, with historic and important objects that with care will easily outlive several generations of mere humans, the moral and legal privileges afforded by ownership are very small and are open to question.

From the foregoing, and indeed the general tone of the book, it is apparent that she feels this to be not merely a debate about aesthetic appearance but a warning that irreversible damage is being done. Unfortunately, Walden makes it less than clear what she means by over-cleaning, and since this is central to the book it does rather hinder discussion.
